In 1997 I received my first opportunity to serve on an Emmaus outside team. Little did I realize how much Emmaus would become a part of my life.
Since that first introduction to an Emmaus team I have been blessed to serve in a variety of capacities. Each time, though, one element of the Walk to Emmaus has presented itself to me in a reoccurring fashion... Supplies that are used by the community and pilgrims in the course of a three day weekend.
The Upper Room Handbook on Emmaus lists the required supplies for an Emmaus weekend. It is a list that fits on one page with space left over for a small story.
Anyone that has ever been close to an Emmaus weekend can tell you that is certainly not the case for Denton. Our list consumes several pages and takes up most of the available space in the trailer that the community owns.
Why does the Denton community have so many supplies? Good question and I hope to provide a good answer.
Experience has shown that the Handbook supply list is all that is required for the pilgrim to completely experience the weekend as it was designed by it's creators. The additional supplies have proven to be an aid to those that function to support the pilgrims.
However, all additions to the Handbook supply list must be evaluated for their specific purpose and how that purpose relates to fulfilling the main purpose of the Walk to Emmaus. One of my functions is to maintain the supply list and add or remove items as needed. Your local governing board oversees the overall Walk for this Denton Emmaus Community and makes final decisions about each component of the walk, within the guidelines presented by the Upper Room.
How does all this effect you? From time to time I, acting on behalf of the board, will ask the community to make donations in certain areas of the list and may even return certain donations back to the community. Never think that your particular donation is not appreciated, it may just be that particular donation has a limited use for only a few walks.
This Denton Area Emmaus Community will never survive without the generous donations of it's members in terms of service and money and specific items requested. So, as the current supply coordinator for the community, I wish to thank you for our great start and our future success.
